痛悼小卫弟兄

昨夜突然传来噩耗,听在耳中,不能相信。反复问:“是哪个小卫?” “确定去世了?”
怎么可能?辉明和我互相问?
等到儿子们入睡了,赶紧赶过去。
小卫妈妈坐在地上捶地大哭,没法安慰,不能安慰,不知如何安慰。
及至看到小卫的父亲,老人说不出话来。
上楼看到王玲抱着Bella 坐在床头的地上,大声哭。连小小的Bella 也是眼眶湿润,妈妈哭得更大声时,小Bella滚下了大大的泪珠……
小卫,在suppose昨天下午做报告时没有出现,才最终引起同事注意,虽然在此前就有熟识的同事一直找他而找不到。最后security人员撬开一层一个单间的厕所,发现后立刻报警。等到王玲到现场,只看到大堆的警察。她只看到了小卫去世后的照片。
他们夫妇,在恩典教会成立前,就到我们家里查经。辉明说他在等坐公车时认识了他们,邀请他们过来查经。后来王玲自己来了:她漂亮有主见。王玲来了几次后,小卫在某晚终于也来了。属于那种“千呼万唤始出来”的。然而,小卫很健谈,也enjoy讲话,同时也知识面广,对即使一些专业外的事情也知一二。记得他谈到杜威的实用主义,因为那时团契有个姐妹的先生在哥大哲学系做访问学者。相较之下,王玲温和沉默,静静地看着讲话兴致极高的小卫。
那时他们还没有小孩。
恩典教会成立后,小卫和王玲夫妇,还有王前弟兄、菘如姐妹,以及另外一位,是最早一批参加受浸班的,最后王玲提前受洗,一位离开,小卫和菘如、王前一起受浸。那是何等高兴的一天啊!《快乐日》被我们唱了一遍又一遍,不知道唱了多少遍。
小卫受浸后,刚开始常规性的来教会,后来比较少,做生命科学的实验转起来没个完,我们体谅他工作忙。但是教会有大活动他和家人的身影是一定会出现的。就在前几天,王玲姐妹还微信给辉明要预留全家人国殇节的retreat。近两个月陆陆续续的来了,虽然他只是在楼下坐着工作。我们看着他,彼此笑笑的打招呼,私下里,辉明跟我说:“给他时间灵里长大。”很开心他至少愿陪着太太孩子来教会。Bella也由离不开妈妈奶奶的小宝长成了漂亮独立的小姑娘了。生命真是奇妙。
生命又是如此脆弱。一个36岁,风华正茂的年轻弟兄就这样突然走了,留下年迈的父母,年轻的妻子,刚满三岁的女儿。我不知道神为什么允许这样的事情发生,只确信小卫弟兄已息了地上的劳苦,只求
神 的恩膏厚厚地加在小卫父母、王玲和Bella身上。白发人送黑发人,青年丧夫,幼年失怙,还有什么能比这更难为我们渺小软弱的生命承受的吗? 神啊,你都看顾!
多年前,我们敬爱的年轻的才华横溢的时安弟兄病重去世前曾写过一首诗:
无论黑夜有多长,
黑夜尽头是曙光。
无论乌云压城城欲摧,
乌云背后是太阳。
纵然高山低谷,
纵然死荫幽谷,
大水泛滥之时是神为王。耶和华仍坐着为王。
我深处的呼求主都听见,
信靠主必不至羞愧。
一宿虽哭泣,清晨必欢呼。
我的好处不在他以外。
小卫弟兄先我们一步走了,然而在永恒的盼望里,我们当有再见的日子!
再见,陈小卫弟兄 尹辉明,二零一七年四月二十三日
公元二零一七年四月二十日中午,陈小卫弟兄因脑动脉血管瘤破裂,在哥伦比亚大学医学中心意外去世。他走得如此突然,无人预料,无法帮助,也无力挽回。一个如此年轻的生命离开我们,有不尽的心痛和遗憾。
小卫是我同乡,我们都是湖南人,我比小卫大九岁。尽管我们的父辈说着不同的方言,我们还是很谈得来,算是一家人了。第一次认识小卫,是大约四年前在我家,他是陪太太王玲参加我们查经聚会的。那时,他们还没有孩子,小卫很健谈,心里有什么就说什么,是一个真诚的人。第一次见到他,他就谈了很多我们湖南人的事,我也跟他谈到神的事情,那时候,他说,他感到冥冥之中,有一位神,可是他太忙,没有时间,也没有心思去琢磨耶稣基督就是那一位。作为八零后到美国,需要先把工作做好,把家庭照顾好再说。我知道他是个事业心强,责任感重的人。我劝他说,其实认识神与工作,家庭并不矛盾,我们都是和他一样一步一步走过来的。认识神使我们工作有力量,家庭生活有味道。他说,他感兴趣,只要有时间,会尽量参与查经。从此,尽管他不是每周都来我家,我们有机会常常见面。
后来,女儿Isabella出生了,我和蔡老师及蔡师母一起去看他们,看到小卫如何照顾孩子和太太。那时候,他的岳父岳母也在这里。他给不会英文的老人,定了很多中文的电视电影频道。我知道他是个好女婿,好丈夫,好父亲。我们也分享一些在美国带孩子,养孩子的经历和经验。我们也给他介绍基督徒如何看待生命:包括生命的开始,人生的意义,和生命的结局。这不是偶然,不是巧合,也不是人可以完全控制的。人活在自己的世界里,因为自己的骄傲看不到神。但是藉着耶稣基督,我们就可以认识神,经历神的恩典。我也问了他四个问题:一)是否相信有一位神,他是创造世界万有的,也是造我们的神?他说他相信!二)是否相信自己是有罪的,不能凭自己认识神?他说他承认自己是有罪的!三)是否相信耶稣基督为救赎世人,死在十字架上,三天后复活。他说他相信圣经记载的是真的!四)是否愿意把自己的生命放在神手里,跟随耶稣的脚踪行。他说他愿意。当时,他和太太就一起祷告并决定成为基督的门徒。
二零一五年六月十四日,他和教会其他几位弟兄姐妹,一同在众人面前,在恩典教会见证并受洗归入耶稣基督。一年多以来,我知道他经历了很多。换身份,换导师,新课题,买房子,……,他受洗之后的教会生活不是很规律。我偶尔在学校公共汽车上遇见他,我们总是坐在一起。他的第一句话总是亏欠神,最近太忙,远离了神。接着,就是如何的忙碌,写文章,做实验,养老鼠,不同的课题,……。最近一次遇见他,他说,如此忙碌的生活,不一定有长远的益处。他想把一篇大文章结束后,考虑申请绿卡,以便今后换到公司工作,就会有更多时间和家人一起,过有规律教会生活。他最近也更多地来教会,可是放不下工作。即便星期天来教会,还是带着电脑工作。我心里觉得不妥,对他也无可奈何,湖南多土匪(開玩笑話 - 編者按)。小卫是一个心里有什么就说什么,心里想什么就做什么的人。
小卫是一个热心人,尽管他的研究工作很花时间,对于别人的事情,他非常关心而且蛮有同情心。同事或者朋友生病,我常常找他咨询,他总是尽力帮忙,查找信息。他照顾新来的同事,偶尔带他们到教会来。我在学校公共汽车上传福音,发传单时,有时遇见他,他总是尽力帮忙,把我介绍给他的朋友们,称我们都是基督徒。
在耶稣基督里,他还很小。噩耗传来,我不能相信。确定他真的被主接去,我心里对小卫弟兄的一丝抱怨都化为了泪水。主耶稣给了他这个劳苦负重的生命,他还在的时候,没有分担他的重担,也没有花时间和他在一起。早知道他搬新家了,我第一次拜访,居然是在他去世的当天。对不起,我的兄弟!
如今,小卫弟兄歇了世间的劳苦 。“凡靠着他(耶稣基督)进到神面前的人,他都能拯救到底;因为他是长远活着,替他们祈求”。我不能明白事情为什么会是这样发生?然而,我深信他的所在,于他长远有益,也是我要去的。小卫弟兄,你先到了,我也要来,再见!

Dear lab members and friends,
I understand that all of you want to know about our dear friend and colleague Sean. It gives me immense, immense grief to tell you that he passed away this afternoon. We do not know much about what happened except that he was found in one of the bathrooms downstairs.
Obviously, this is an enormously difficult time for all of us -- and especially for his family. Sean, as you know, was a formidable scientist, a passionate thinker, a dedicated colleague and a close personal friend. I cannot comprehend the loss. I am totally shocked and speechless, as I am sure all of you are as well.
I will be speaking with each of you individually to offer you counseling and support. And I will also be speaking to his family during this time. I am traveling internationally tomorrow, but will cut the trip short and return to the lab early next week.
I do not know any further details about this event, except to say that it has left us all speechless and bereft. His loss carries a burden of such immensity that I cannot even begin to understand it. Let us meet together at the soonest,

Dear Colleagues,
As many of you have already heard, our dear co-investigator Sean passed away yesterday. He was going to present at the Translational meeting and had been diligently preparing his talk. It is an unspeakable tragedy and our hearts go out to Sean¨s family. We also offer our heartiest condolences to Sid and the entire lab. What a loss for them. I know that he was more than a co-worker for Sid who truly valued Sean as a personal friend as well and had been working with him for seven years. Let us remind ourselves of what Aeschylus wrote some 2500 years ago:
And even in our sleep,
pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart,
until in our own despair,
against our will,
comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.
May Shawn¨s family and his friends and colleagues find peace.
Let us pay a tribute to Sean¨s excellence and dedication by re-committing ourselves to work harder and ever more sincerely in order to bring relief to our suffering patients. He would like no better tribute than our pledge to carry on what he worked so devotedly for.

It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing on April 20th, 2017 of Dr. Xiaowei (Sean) Chen at the age of 35. Dr. Chen grew up in China, completed his BS and MS there, followed by a Ph.D. degree from CHUK in Hong Kong, and then moved to the U.S. in July 2011 to finish his graduate training and then to undertake postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Timothy Wang, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Digestive & Liver Diseases at Columbia University Medical Center. He was promoted in 2015 to the rank of Associate Research Scientist at CUMC. His research was focused on the development of myeloid cells (neutrophils and macrophages), and the regulation of hematopoietic stem cells by histamine. He was extremely productive, publishing eleven papers during his time at Columbia, and recently moved to the laboratory of Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, Assistant Professor in Hematology-Oncology, to continue his training in hematopoietic stem cells and their potential role in leukemia. His career was clearly on a rapid upward trajectory, and he was well respected by all of his colleges. His death while at work yesterday, which appeared to be due to medical causes, was unexpected. He leaves behind a wife, Lin Wang, and a young daughter, Bella. He will be sorely missed.
